AWC Karena Somerville
Scholarship
Each year, the Association for Women in Communications (AWC)
Westchester/Fairfield Chapter presents the Karena Somerville Scholarship
award to a student who best demonstrates professionalism in the field of
communications. This award, named in honor of Karena Somerville, a
founding member and greatly admired past president of the
Westchester/Fairfield Chapter of AWC, is intended to recognize
outstanding students and provide $1,000 of financial aid toward their
future communications studies.
AWC’s origins go back to 1909, when seven female students at the
University of Washington in Seattle created a women’s journalism society
called Theta Sigma Phi, renamed Women in Communications in 1972. AWC is
an international network of women and men from all fields of
communications, committed to advancing the role of women in the fields
of journalism and communications through education, professional
development, and mentoring.
We are beginning our 2006 application process and encourage your
students to apply for this prestigious award. If you know of any
students who will be pursuing a career in a communications related
field, we welcome their application. To qualify, a candidate must be
majoring in a communications related field such as English,
communication arts, journalism, public relations, marketing or
advertising and be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses as a
matriculating student for the upcoming 2006-2007 academic year.

obtain an application form.
Please note that completed applications must be received no later than
May 8, 2006 as indicated on the application form. The benefits of this
award extend beyond the $1,000 prize. Recognition by a national
professional organization is of great value to graduate school
admissions committees and prospective employers. It also reflects
favorably on the college or university the student attended.
If you have any questions about the Karena Somerville Scholarship, they
can be directed to me by e-mail at
